Your Skin’s Daily Armor

When it comes to glowing, healthy skin, there’s one step in your routine that should never be skipped: sunscreen. Whether you’re investing in monthly custom facials or practicing consistent at-home care, daily sun protection is essential for preserving your skin’s health, youthfulness, and beauty.

At Invigorate Spa, we’re passionate about educating our guests on skincare that works, because true beauty begins with protection. In this blog, we’ll break down the types of sunscreen, what makes them different, and how to choose the best one for your skin type and lifestyle.

Why Does Sunscreen Matter?

UV rays are incredibly powerful, even on cloudy days or when you’re indoors near windows. Without daily SPF protection, your skin is exposed to the damaging effects of sun exposure, leading to premature aging, loss of elasticity, hyperpigmentation, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

Protecting your skin with SPF isn’t just about avoiding a sunburn, it’s about maintaining your long-term skin health and maximizing the benefits of your spa treatments.

There are Two Main Types of Sunscreen

1. Mineral (Physical) Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreen (also known as physical sunscreen) is a type of sun protection made with natural minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Unlike chemical sunscreens that absorb UV rays, mineral sunscreen sits on the skin’s surface and physically reflects UV rays away, acting like a shield.

Mineral sunscreen is available in three forms: creams, sprays and powders; each offering broad-spectrum protection in a way that fits your lifestyle.

If you love skincare that’s effective and easy to use, mineral powder sunscreen is a game-changer. It offers the powerful, broad-spectrum protection of traditional mineral sunscreen without the mess or shine.

Benefits of Mineral Sunscreen

  • Gentle on the skin, ideal for sensitive, acne-prone, or post-treatment skin
  • Reef-safe & eco-friendly, free of harmful ingredients like oxybenzone
  • Works immediately, no need to wait 15 minutes before sun exposure
  • Non-toxic & natural, often combined with skin-soothing botanicals

Cons:

  • Creams and sprays can leave a white cast (though many newer formulas are tinted or sheer)
  • May feel heavier on the skin (except the powder)

2. Chemical Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreen protects the skin by absorbing UV rays, converting them into heat, and then releasing that heat from the skin. Unlike mineral sunscreens that sit on the surface, chemical formulas penetrate the skin’s top layers to offer protection. The active ingredients often include: Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Homosalate, Octocrylene.

Benefits of Chemical Sunscreen

  • Lightweight & blendable, great for daily wear, especially under makeup
  • No white cast, deal for deeper skin tones
  • Water- and sweat-resistant, many formulas are great for outdoor activities
  • No visible residue

Cons:

  • Can cause irritation in sensitive skin types
  • Needs 15–20 minutes to become effective after application
  • Some ingredients may not be reef-safe

Make SPF a Ritual

Sunscreen isn’t just a summer essential, it’s a year-round commitment to protecting and honoring your skin. Incorporate it into your daily ritual, reapply when outdoors, and pair it with regular professional care for radiant, resilient skin that lasts a lifetime.
